Welcome to the website of Nickurra Stud (the name Nickurra was chosen and it is an African Tribal word and means
Breeder of Champions)
The Nickurra Stud is situated some 174 kilometers (approx 2 hrs) south east of Perth, on 160 acres of well fenced land with the Hotham River running through the middle of the property, and near a very small township called Popanyinning. The township itself is on the fringes of the wheat belt and located in the great southern agricultural region of WA. The township is also situated on the Great Southern Railway; a private railway built by the Western Australian Land Company and opened up for service in 1889 and Popanyinning was at that time one of the original sidings on that rail line when it opened.
In 1896 the Western Australian government purchased the rail line and land, and in 1903 decided to have a few lots surveyed at the Popanyinning siding to meet the requirements of the local settlers. After survey the township of Popanyinning was gazetted in 1904. Popanyinning is an Aboriginal name, first recorded by the surveyor John Forrest in 1869, as being an aboriginal name referring to or for a pool in the Hotham River. The true meaning of the word Popanyinning is not fully known but Popanyinning is certainly a place of peace and tranquility, beautiful in the winter months but also it can be very harsh and unforgiving in the summer months.
I first became involve with horses back in 1968 when my children wanted to have ponies they could ride and enjoy. This soon changed as it does to buying a better Horse/Pony so they could attend Pony Club.
In and during that process I fell in love with an Appaloosa Stallion that had been imported from USA. Which in turn led on to my purchasing my own first Appaloosa Stallion along with a small band of mares in 1970, I infact became a member of the Appaloosa Association back in 1970, at the same time we set about setting up and the promotion of our own Stud, which we called "Nickurra" and so began our long association with and the breeding of Appaloosa's, or to be more exact the spotted horses and ponies we are now known for today.
Wyndarra Little Trooper not only has excelled in the showring himself winning many "SUPREME" Championships, but his offspring have consistently done the same.
Our Miniature herd comprising some of the best bloodlines in Australia and incorporating some of the best bloodlines from America will no doubt exceed themselves in the showring too! Some of them already have!!
My children came home one day very excited saying that they had seen a pony Stallion with spots, the same as the Appaloosa and described him to me. So intrigued I went around to the property and at first sight immediately fell in love, and decided there and then that I wanted to put a mare to him and to breed the smaller spotted ponies.
This new turn of events saw me become a member of the Palouse Pony Association in 1974 and began my life time (so far), association with the Palouse pony or spotted pony (one I cannot ever see myself forsaking).
I have been very careful and selective in my breeding program and the blood lines I have introduced and used and that have now become so infused in my Palouse Herd make them descendents of and from some of the worlds most famous and well recognized Appaloosas Ponies and Horses.
I have also been a Foundation Member, (No 31) of the Miniature Horse Association of Australia Inc, since it's inception in 1989, I have always been well respected throughout the industry because of my honesty, integrity and my knowledge of horses and the breed. Likewise my Stud "Nickurra" has also been held in the highest esteem and is well recognized throughout both Australia and overseas for the quality of the horses and ponies it produces. Infact I would venture to say My Stud "Nickurra" is extremely well known and ranked amongst one of the most prestige's studs in Australia and have had many years of good sales until recent times as a result and I thank my clients for their faith and their purchases and support.
I am proud to be able to boast I have sold my Palouse Ponies around the world and have been pleased that they have been judged by world class and world ranked judges in the show ring with great success with those judges having made amazing comments about the quality and conformation of them. (Through selective breeding it has justifies my commitment to attaining excellence through out the Stud?)
Nickurra Stud still breeds the Palouse Ponies and Miniature Horses to this very day and usually we have horses for sale so please contact us with your requirement and we will endeavour to be of assistance to you.
It is our continuing goal to breed the ideal Miniature Horse and Palouse Pony, horses and ponies that possess purity of movement, correct conformation, and of total horse type with exceptional beauty and temperament thrown in just for good measure.
We are justifiably incredibly proud of our stock, the quality we have in our mares and stallions and the offspring they produce and their achievements. Its taken hard dedicated work to achieve this but extremely satisfying to know we have done it.
I hope you enjoy your stroll through Nickurra's Studs New Website, and come back again real soon as it will be updated from time to time.
I would also like to give a big Thank You to Brenda Oldenhof of Silver Star Miniature Horse Stud in Tasmania for constructing this site for me, thanks Mate you have been a true and honest friend.
Yours in miniatures Pam Herrod
